Freddie Redd & Butch Warren December 4, 2010

Jazz legends Freddie Redd and Butch Warren joined forces for the first time in our unique house concert setting for a program of original compositions and classic favorites. This working session for potential recording project(s) is leading to additional collaborations between them. They were joined by musical director and saxophonist Brad Linde, Brian Settles (also on sax), and Tony Martucci (on drums), each of whom are outstanding bandleaders in the vanguard of DC's jazz scene.

The setlist was:
set1:
I Remember Monk (Butch Warren)
Nica Steps Out (Freddie Redd)
interlude (Freddie Redd) - solo
I'll Remember April (Gene de Paul/Patricia Johnston/Don Raye)
Laura (David Raskin/Johnny Mercer) - trio
The Way I Feel (Butch Warren)
set2:
I Get A Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter) - trio
Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk/Cootie Williams/Bernie Hanighen)
All The Things You Are (Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II)
Barack Obama (Butch Warren)
interlude (Freddie Redd) - solo
Melanie (Freddie Redd)

Brad prepared charts of much of their original material but the band had not had a chance to play together prior to the show. In true jazz spirit they took things as they came, brilliantly. The cohesive unit delivered many wonderful moments, with everyone contributing in fine style.

Some lo-fi video to give you an idea of the proceedings is posted on YouTube (you can search where this song is for more of the show):
